Layers of tremulous flutes rise and fall, punctuated by a woman’s breaths, gasps and growls. Electronic birdsong-like trills flicker into being and then vanish, as if someone, or something, is struggling to be born, somewhere in the secret depths of a dark forest…
This is ‘Firefly’, the extraordinary new audio work from acclaimed artist Marianna Simnett. The piece is adapted from her recent flute opera ‘GORGON’, a newly-commissioned piece which premiered during the 2023 Berlin Art Week and which makes groundbreaking use of real-time AI machine learning alongside traditional musical performance, acting and choreography. Simnett’s accompanying video was produced by painstakingly stitching together thousands of AI images, creating an uncanny vision that floats between the mythological and the technological. This is the second single from ‘Sampler1’, a forthcoming compilation of music by visual artists who are known for the innovative use of sound within their work. The full album is released on November 17th 2023 on OUTPUTS. ‘Sampler1’ is intended to be a fundraiser, to allow OUTPUTS to commission new works, and will be pay-what-you-like on Bandcamp.
